About DHE photography
I’m David and my home is in Settle, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, UK. Although I live in a beautiful, wild area, strangely, most of my photographic inspiration comes from exploring the northern urban areas that I access by train.
Morecambe and Bradford are two of my favourite places, full of character (and characters!).
My interests (and cameras) have changed a lot over the years. I’ve moved from medium format colour landscape into monochrome urban subjects and now my focus is on wandering the streets, making black & white portraits with a Leica in hand.
Process-wise, I make a point of asking for permission to take a person’s photograph. Not only as I enjoy learning names and hearing stories, but because I find this way of working much more respectful and meaningful. I realised that shooting candid photos without asking permission was making me feel uncomfortable, so now I do it differently. I want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to every person featured on this website; making your portrait always made my day.
Another big thank you goes to the NHS. For the past 35 years I’ve been extremely deaf, a major challenge for a street photographer! In January 2024 I received a cochlear implant that has changed my life. It means I'm much more able to interact properly with the people I meet. So thank you everyone at the Bradford Listening for Life Centre. I make far fewer mistakes with names these days and the amazing 'bionic ears' has transformed the way I work.
Finally, and most radically, for me, from September 2024 I moved right away from social media. More time for the real world, more brain space for photography. It’s already a huge relief.
See you here… and out there!
